Tvrđa - The Citadel

Text

Your journey in Osijek starts at Tvrđa, the city’s historic Citadel and most famous landmark. Built by the Austrians in 1712 after the Ottoman expulsion, this fortress was originally designed for defense, but over the centuries it has become the vibrant heart of Osijek.

Today, Tvrđa is a lively hub for students and locals alike. Inside its walls, you’ll find cafés, museums, several university faculties, the city administration, and even a monastery. You can take a leisurely walk along its historic streets, grab a coffee, or visit the Museum of Slavonia. Its mix of history and student energy makes Tvrđa the perfect starting point for discovering Osijek.
